Brooklyn Nets fall to Orlando Magic in Summer League opener
The four highest-profile players on the roster - Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, and draft picks Dzanan Musa and Rodions Kurucs - were nowhere to be found on opening night, but the Nets had 2017-18 two-way players Milton Doyle and James Webb III in the starting lineup, the former putting up nine points, six rebounds, and three assists in a team-high 31 minutes and the latter chipping in three points and eight boards in 16 minutes.
The Nets shot 38 percent overall and led for much of the first quarter and early second, going up by as many as 10 at one point, but the Magic took the lead midway through the second and never looked back, and the Nets could not overcome an eight-point halftime deficit despite winning each of the final two quarters.
Shawn Dawson was the leading scorer for the Nets, tallying 20 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. Tyler Davis was the second-leading scorer with 13, Theo Pinson added nine points and seven boards, and Semaj Christon had eight points and a team-high four assists.
For Orlando, Troy Caupain had a game-high 22 points, and Jonathan Isaac added 20 and seven boards. Top draft pick Mo Bamba had 11 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in 19 minutes, while Isaiah Briscoe had 16 points, and Khem Birch matched the game-high seven rebounds off the bench.
The loss starts the Nets' summer journey at 0-1, but they'll be right back in action Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are also 0-1 after an 88-87 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in their summer opener.
