Tampa Bay Rays P Blake Snell breaks toe, goes on 10-day IL

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed ace lefthander Blake Snell on the 10-day disabled list with a broken right toe, the team announced Tuesday.

Snell said he broke his toe when a decorative granite stand in his bathroom fell on his right foot as he was getting out of the shower Sunday night, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

His IL placement is retroactive to Sunday.

On the season, the reigning American League Cy Young winner is 2-1 in four starts with an ERA of 2.16. In 25 innings, he has struck out 36 batters, which ties him for the major-league lead.

Snell, 26, was 21-5 last season with a 1.89 ERA.

In a corresponding move, the Rays called up right-hander Emilio Pagan from Triple-A Durham. In two seasons in the majors with Seattle (2017) and Oakland (2018), he has a 5-4 record with a 3.85 ERA in 112.1 innings pitched.

At Durham this season, Pagan has thrown six innings over four games, surrendering two hits and no earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
